5 Sage Ways to Use Sage

Sage is a remarkable herb whose purpose extends beyond Thanksgiving holiday cookery.

The name Salvia Officianalis, known as common sage, references the spiritual and ancient medical practices associated with this woody purple-flowered plant from the mint family.   Sage is another word for Wise, and Salvia can be translated as ‘to be saved’ or ‘to cure’ while officinas were rooms in monasteries where herbal medicines were kept for compounding remedies and medicines (1). Compounding herbs is integral to traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medical practices(2).
In traditional, ancient, & native medical practices there is “good medicine” vs “bad medicine”; good medicine is wisdom, knowledge, practices, remedies, procedures that help the host while bad medicine is that which harms the host(3). Sage is good medicine.

There are over 900 unique species of the Sage plant with therapeutic properties(4).
Sage is commonly used to boost cognition, treat Alzheimer’s & dementia, treat ezcema, psoriasis, acne, & skin infections, manage diabetes, regulate blood pressure, relieve indigestion, and more (5).

Here’s some “sage” advice for using Sage Studio’s favorite herb.

#1 – Plant Sage in your herb garden!

Be sure to include your favorite Sage varieties, along with Thyme, Oregano, Savory, Rosemary, Mint, Marjoram, Parsley, and Lavender when planting your Spring garden in the Texas Hill Country.

These herbs are very easy to grow in Central Texas sunny climate. They keep pests and parasitic insects away from healthy vegetables if planted nearby. Sage, specifically, keeps cabbage moths and carrot flies away from broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbages while attracting pollinators like honey bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies(6).

#2 – Sage has Culinary Uses… But put the Stuffings Aside

The addition of Sage in Herbes De Provence adds a peppery flavour and increases the savory notes that can make roasted root vegetables, potatoes, eggs, salads, fatty fish, poultry, and pork taste amazing.

Herbs de Provence is a dried herb blend from a wine-region in southeast France(7) with a climate comparable to our Texas Hill Country climate.
It is a great spice blend that flavors a wide range of savory dishes to pair with your fine wines.

Sage has several Topical & Household Uses – Sage Oil can be used on its own or to compound the versatility of essential oil blends.

Thieves Oil is a most useful Medieval blend of potent essential oils touted for their disinfectant & health promoting properties. Sage Oil can be added to offer additional antimicrobial & antioxidant boost. Sage Oil can be used in the same home-made cleaning products, oral health products, hair & skin formulas, and illness prevention & remedy as Thieves Oil.

The origin and the recipe for this well-known essential oil blend vary slightly and are very interesting. (8)

The story is as such…
Four merchant traders who imported spices, such as cinnamon & clove from India, became a band of thieves when the Black Plague swept through Europe and interrupted trade.
Most people were afraid to loot the homes of dead victims. But these traders with their knowledge regarding powerful and potent herbs believed they could protect themselves by rubbing and ingesting specific kinds of vinegar, oils, and spices.
The king caught wind of lucrative trade during a time of famine and demanded the thieves exchange their “secret formula” for continued life.
The sage thieves avoided death by sharing the herbs used to create the following blends.

Sage has been used by sage practitioners to dispel negativity and create a healthy environment for ages.

Salvia divinorum or “Divine Sage” is a species of Sage that produces intense hallucinogenic effects and synaesthesia when it’s leaves are consumed by chewing, smoking, or in tea. It is the most potent naturally occurring psychedelic (9) and has been used to connect with the nature of reality and experience enlightenment. Those considering using salvia divinorum for spiritual practice are cautioned to have mutual respect for the plant as a being capable of communicating experiences as rich as a human or any other cyclic being.

In shamanic healing practices White Sage is often bundled and burnt, as the smoke is used to release the spirit of a plant or once living thing to dispel stagnant energies and be a catalyst for change. Differents Smokes are offered during different ceremonies for different purposes. White Sage bundles are common tools used to circulate energy and promote a healing environment. (10)

~Make a White Sage Bundle~
Collect the extra growth from a happy and healthy White Sage plant. Dry the leaves as detailed above & pull them apart.
Add other fragrant dried herbs if you’d like. Lavender & rose petals are nice. Don’t worry, you won’t anger any spirits.
Gather twine or string and bundle the gathered dried herbs tightly.

To use the bundle. Light one end on fire & blow out the flame when creating smoke. Fan the smoke to keep embers lit and smoke flowing. Waft smoke over host & in a clockwise direction through or around the area. Corners often collect stagnant energy and should not be neglected. Make sure you have a heatproof bowl to collect falling embers and to put out fire.
